Puppy Training

The arrival of a new puppy is a fun and exciting time but it is also a hugely important time in your new puppy’s development. The experiences your new puppy learns now will go on and shape how they behave when they are older, good or bad.

In fact the first four months of a puppy’s life are all about learning and exploring. A bad experience now could lead to lifelong problems such as fear of children, or fear of other dogs. So it is very important to learn how to care for your puppy correctly and foster good learning experiences to prevent problem behaviour when your puppy becomes an adult dog.

The Hamilton Vetcare Puppy pre-school is a fun and safe environment where our resident puppy pre-school teachers, Jacqui Jones & Molly Golding, will be on hand to help you and your puppy learn some vital life skills at this very impressionable age.

Puppy Pre-school training program
Our course runs for three weeks allowing your puppy to socialise with pups of a similar age and with other people. Jacqui & Molly provide a comprehensive course detailing all aspects of puppy care, including the teaching of calming signals your puppy uses when meeting new dogs, and the language of your dog and how to work with it. This is of great importance as it helps your puppy learn how to behave with other dogs, people and children, but also teaches you what your dog is communicating.

During the course you will learn
• Basic obedience such as how to make your puppy sit, stay and drop
• How to stop your puppy chewing the wrong things
• How to toilet train your puppy
• How to effectively and safely introduce your puppy to other dogs
• Advanced obedience including teaching your puppy to leave things, come back, and walk to heel.
• How to correctly examine your pet so you are able to recognise abnormalities that may arise.

Jacqui & Molly use only positive reinforcement training methods with praise and treats. Course notes are provided at the start of each session to help reinforce the lessons learned.

Who can come to Puppy Pre-school?
Any puppies who have had their first veterinary health check and vaccination (including Canine Kennel cough) are welcome to come to puppy preschool. (Hamilton Vetcare may decline entry to puppy preschool if a puppy shows signs of ill-health. This is for the protection of other puppies in the class. If your puppy shows any signs of illness on the day of the class please contact the clinic for advice.) All puppies must be under 16 weeks of age when the class starts. Puppies are not required to attend the first class. The first class concentrates on general health & behaviour, toilet training and first aid treatment.

When & where does Puppy Pre-school run?
Puppy preschool runs once a week on a Thursday night for a total of three weeks. The classes are held at Hamilton Vetcare and run for 1 hour from 7 pm. Hamilton Vetcare is located at 97 French Street, Hamilton, Victoria.

Please call us on (03) 55 722 552 or contact us by email for pricing and the start date for our next class.
